Chapter 47: After an Accident

Information Exchange

Exchange license, insurance, and registration information with the other driver — do this even for a seemingly minor fender-bender, since injuries and damage are not always obvious immediately.

Documentation

Photograph the scene, vehicle positions, and any visible damage before vehicles are moved if it is safe to do so. California requires reporting to the DMV within 10 days any collision involving injury, death, or more than $1,000 in property damage — this report is separate from and in addition to any police report filed at the scene.
