Chapter 40: Winter Driving

Traction Requirements

Certain mountain routes require chains or approved traction devices during posted winter conditions — check current requirements before heading into snow country, since the rules can change day to day with the weather.

Gentle Inputs

Accelerate and brake gently to avoid triggering a skid, since ice dramatically reduces the traction available for any sudden input. Stopping distance on ice can be several times longer than on dry pavement, so following distance needs to scale up accordingly.
