Conditions You Must Report
California requires drivers to disclose certain medical conditions that could suddenly impair their ability to control a vehicle safely: seizure disorders, episodes of unconsciousness or fainting, serious uncontrolled heart conditions, and some neurological or mental health conditions where medication stability is a factor.
What Happens After You Report
Reporting a condition does not automatically mean losing your license. The DMV's Driver Safety branch typically requests a report from your physician describing whether and how the condition is controlled, and may set a re-evaluation schedule rather than an outright denial. The honest-disclosure system exists because an undisclosed seizure disorder, for instance, puts everyone on the road at risk the moment symptoms strike unexpectedly — reporting protects you legally as much as it protects other drivers.
