Chapter 44: Seat Belts

Adult Requirements

California law requires the driver and every passenger to wear a seat belt, regardless of seating position in the vehicle.

Child Passenger Rules

Children under 2 must generally ride in a rear-facing car seat unless they exceed the seat's height or weight limit first. Older children need an appropriate forward-facing seat or booster until they meet specific height and age thresholds where an adult seat belt fits them correctly on its own.
