Chapter 27: Hill Parking
Downhill, No Curb
Turn your front wheels toward the edge of the road. If your brakes fail, the car rolls away from traffic rather than into it.
Uphill, With a Curb
Turn your front wheels away from the curb. If the car rolls backward, the rear of the front tire catches against the curb and stops it.
Uphill, No Curb
Turn your wheels toward the edge of the road, same logic as parking downhill without a curb — you want an unrestrained rollaway to head off the roadway, not into it.
In every case, always set the parking brake in addition to positioning the wheels — the wheel angle is a backup, not a replacement for the brake.
