White Lines - Same Direction Traffic
White lines separate lanes moving the same way. A broken white line means lane changes are permitted when safe; a solid white line discourages changing lanes in that stretch, often near an exit or a merge point where drivers need predictable lane discipline.
Yellow Lines - Opposing Traffic
Yellow lines mark the boundary with oncoming traffic. A single broken yellow line permits passing when the way is clear; a solid yellow line on your side forbids it; and a double solid yellow line forbids passing from either direction — this is one of the most commonly cited markings for dangerous head-on-collision-risk passing.
Special Markings
Diagonal hatching marks an area you should not drive or park in, often channeling traffic away from a hazard or median. Raised reflective markers ("Botts' dots" or similar) supplement painted lines, especially useful at night or in rain when paint alone is harder to see.
