Chapter 37: School Buses

The Stop Requirement

When a school bus extends its stop arm and activates flashing red lights, traffic in both directions on an undivided road must stop — not just vehicles behind the bus. This is one of the strictest right-of-way rules in the entire handbook because it protects children crossing near a large vehicle with significant driver blind spots.

When to Proceed Again

Remain stopped until the lights stop flashing and the stop arm retracts, confirming all children have safely finished crossing — do not treat the moment the bus starts moving again as your own cue to go.
