Chapter 19: Four-Way Stops
The Four-Way Stop Sequence
- Come to a full and complete stop at the limit line — rolling stops are a citable violation even if no other traffic is visible.
- Yield to any vehicle that arrived and stopped before you.
- If two vehicles stop at essentially the same time, the one on the right goes first.
- If you are facing another vehicle directly across the intersection and both are turning, the vehicle turning left yields to the one going straight or turning right.
Uncontrolled Intersections
Where there are no signs or signals at all — common on quiet residential streets — the same right-of-way logic applies: yield to traffic already in the intersection, and yield to the vehicle on your right if you arrive together. When genuinely unsure, the safest move is always to slow down and let the other driver go.
