Chapter 11: Regulatory Signs

Regulatory signs are the category that actually tells you what the law requires — they are not suggestions, and ignoring one is a citable violation just like ignoring a traffic light.

Recognizing Them

Most regulatory signs share a white background, which is your visual cue that a legal rule is being stated. The shape carries extra meaning on its own: a red octagon always means stop, no matter what language or symbol is on it, and a downward-pointing red-and-white triangle always means yield. Rectangular white signs post specific numeric rules — speed limits, weight limits, or turn restrictions.

Why Shape Matters

Shape recognition exists so you can react correctly even at a glance, in bad light, or through a dirty windshield, before you consciously read the text. A driver who recognizes "octagon equals stop" reacts a half-second faster than one who has to read the word — and at 35mph, half a second covers over 25 feet of travel.
