Chapter 18: Right of Way

The General Rule

At any intersection, three categories of road user get priority ahead of you: pedestrians and cyclists already in a crosswalk, any vehicle already occupying the intersection, and emergency vehicles running lights and siren. "Right of way" is a bit of a misleading phrase — it is never something you can simply take, only something the other party can yield to you.

Simultaneous Arrival

When two vehicles reach an uncontrolled intersection at effectively the same moment, the vehicle on the right proceeds first. This single rule resolves the large majority of ambiguous intersection situations without needing signage at all.
