Chapter 25: Safe Turning

Before the Turn

Signal your intent at least 100 feet before the turn — enough advance notice for following traffic to react rather than being surprised. Reduce your speed before entering the turn itself, since braking mid-turn shifts the car's weight in a way that can reduce tire grip exactly when you need it most.

During the Turn

Stay within your own lane through the full arc of the turn rather than cutting the corner, and check specifically for pedestrians and cyclists who may be crossing in the direction you are turning — they are often outside a driver's central field of view exactly where a turning vehicle is looking.
