Chapter 31: Freeway Exits

Getting Into Position

Move into the exit lane roughly a quarter mile before your exit, giving yourself time to merge smoothly rather than cutting across multiple lanes at the last second.

Slowing Down in the Right Place

Do your braking within the exit ramp itself, not on the through freeway lanes — slowing down while still in freeway traffic is a common cause of rear-end collisions from following vehicles who are not expecting it. If you miss your exit, continue to the next one rather than braking hard, stopping, or reversing.
