Chapter 14: Special Purpose Signs

Do Not Enter

A white "DO NOT ENTER" legend on a red square background marks a spot where entering would put you directly into oncoming traffic — commonly a one-way street approached from the wrong direction, or a freeway exit ramp entered backward. This is one of the few signs where the correct response is not "proceed with caution" but "immediately find another way."

Parking Signs

Parking signs spell out the specific rules for a curb space: permitted hours, permit-only zones, time limits, and tow-away restrictions. Reading the fine print matters here — a sign allowing parking "except 7-9am, 4-6pm weekdays" is very different from one that is simply unrestricted, and a misread sign is a common way to come back to a towed car.
